Amrita Ma Devi
Sister… let’s talk about sweetness. Not the frantic kind that spikes your blood sugar, inflames your gut, and leaves your nervous system frazzled…But the kind your body recognises — the kind nature intended.
In Ayurveda, sweet taste isn’t the enemy. It’s medicine that is the most sattvic of all six tastes. It´s effect on the body is calming, grounding, stabilising, and deeply connected to our sense of safety and contentment.
It’s no accident that the very first taste a baby experiences is sweet milk. Sweet tells the body “You are held. You are loved. You are safe.” But… too much sweetness, especially in the wrong form, aggravates Kapha — creating heaviness, sluggish metabolism, fogginess, lethargy, and emotional stagnation.
But here’s the nuance modern wellness forgets not all sweetness is created equal — and not all bodies digest sweetness the same way.
By the time we reach our 40s and 50s, our nervous system, hormones, and digestion become far more sensitive to what we eat.
Sugar (especially refined sugar) can feel like a shockwave —leaving us anxious, lethargic, inflamed, or craving more.
Ayurveda teaches us to choose sweetness that grounds and nourishes, not overwhelms.
So today, I want to share 3 beautiful alternatives to sugar that support your hormones, your energy, your digestion, and your mental clarity — all while giving you the sweetness your body was designed to receive.
Raw Honey — Warm, Light, and Kapha-Balancing
Raw honey is one of Ayurveda’s most precious medicines.
It’s warm, light, cleansing to the channels of the body, and deeply supportive for women with sluggish digestion or mucus buildup.

Why it works:
Boosts Agni (digestive fire)
Reduces Kapha (congestion, heaviness, lethargy)
Helps stabilise cravings
Pacifies Vata + Pitta when used correctly
How to use it:
Drizzle on warm porridge (never heat it directly!)
Stir into the ginger tea
Pair with warm lemon water for energy
Ayurvedic caution:
Honey should never be heated above 42°C (107°F) — it becomes toxic to the system when cooked.
Coconut Flakes or Coconut Sugar — Cooling + Mineral Rich
Coconut sugar is a favourite for women navigating perimenopause and burnout.
It’s cooling, grounding, rich in minerals, and far gentler on blood sugar than regular sugar.

Why it works:
Supports Pitta (heat, irritability, inflammation)
Stable energy without the crash
Naturally full of nutrients
Easy to digest
How to use it:
Sprinkle coconut flakes over stewed apples
Use coconut sugar in baking for a caramel-like flavour
Add to warm chai or golden milk
Best for Vata + Pitta
(Use sparingly if you tend toward Kapha heaviness or sluggishness.)
Dates and raisins are the queens of sattvic sweetness.
They are soft, nourishing, grounding, and deeply supportive for women craving emotional steadiness and vitality.

Dates are the queens of Ayurvedic sweetness — grounding, strengthening, ojas-building.
Perfect for women who feel depleted, anxious, dry, tired, or stretched thin.
Why they help:
Build Ojas (your glow + immunity)
Soothe Vata + calm anxiety
Strengthen digestion when soaked
Support hormones and blood
Offer emotional steadiness
Try:
1–2 dates soaked overnight, blended into warm milk with cinnamon.
Raisins are cooling, hydrating, and gentle — perfect when your body needs sweetness without weight.
Benefits:
Support elimination
Cool Pitta (heat, irritability)
Hydrate tissues
Soothe the liver + blood
Try:
Raisin water: soak 10–15 raisins overnight and drink the water in the morning.
Maple syrup is deeply nourishing and grounding — perfect for women in burnout or perimenopause.
Balances: Vata + Pitta
Aggravates: Kapha

Why it works:
Full of minerals
Cooling to the liver
Gentle on the gut
Use it:
In baking
On warm oats
In golden milk for a soft sweetness
Jaggery isn’t just unrefined sugar — it’s a mineral-rich, earthy, deeply nourishing sweetener that cooling and strengthening.
Balances: Vata + Pitta
Aggravates: Kapha

Jaggery is made from sugarcane or palm sap and is a traditional sweetener used in many cultures worldwide. It has a lower glycemic index than both maple syrup and coconut blossom sugar, and is rich in essential minerals such as iron, magnesium, and potassium. Jaggery sugar is less sweet than maple syrup and has a slight caramel/molasses-like flavour that is present but not overpowering. It adds the sweetness you crave to beverages without taking away the true flavour of your tea.
Ayurveda doesn’t demonize sweet taste.
In fact, it says:“Sweetness is essential for life — but only when it comes from nature and is taken in balance.”
The real issue isn’t sweetness.
It’s disconnection. Disconnection from the sensation of too much, from nourishment, from the body’s subtle signals.
When sweetness comes from nature, in moderation, and paired with warmth and grounding foods, it becomes nourishment — not depletion.
What we have noticed with my clients is a reduction in the need for sweetness over the years during seasonal Ayurvedic cleanses. As visible proof that slowing down is not collapse — it’s regeneration and restoration of natural taste in the taste buds.
How to Know If Sweet Taste Is Helping You or Hurting You
When sweet taste helps you:
You feel grounded after eating
Your cravings settle
You feel warm, stable, nourished
Your mood lifts gently
When sweet taste hurts you:
You feel heavy, sleepy, puffy
You crave more sweets after eating
Your digestion becomes slow
You feel foggy or emotionally low
Ayurveda always brings us back to balance, not restriction.
