Due to the recent COVID-19 outbreak, our entire humankind across the whole world is focused on how to stay safe. Following the general advise to make trips out only when necessary and keeping a safe distance from others has been hard on us all. But here is some wisdom from Ayurveda on how to keep your immunity strong during this time with teas. Warm drinks will increase agni (digestive fire), creating a better digestion and less toxins in the body. The herbs and spices used in these teas also raises metabolism and increase nutrients in your diet as well as keeps you well hydrated. Which is very important to keep plasma, white blood cells and immunity all flowing.

Enhancing and improving the body’s natural defense mechanism during these times plays a vital role in maintaining health. Although it may seem like a small task these are the preventive steps which will enhance our body’s immunity. Ayurveda, being the science of life, provides us with multiple grandma style home remedies to enhance our natural immunity. Below are some tasty ayurvedic herbal teas to protect our body against virus invasions.

Herbal Tea (Kadha)

Herbal Tea is a simple and an age-old home remedy for cold and cough, but it also helps in enhancing the immune system of our body.

To prepare the perfect herbal tea -

  • 1/4 tsp black pepper or pepper longum
  • 1/4 tsp ginger root
  • 2 cloves
  • 1 lemon peel
  • 1 tsp tulsi leaves

Method

  • Combine black pepper or pepper longum, finely chopped ginger, lemon peel, clove and a teaspoon of tulsi leaves. Then you need to heat the water and add the spices in a pan to boil for 10 minutes.
  • After this strain and pour into the cups.
  • Lastly, add honey to this perfect herbal tea and serve.

Overall this drink is quite relaxing and soothing to your throat and is the best remedy of cold and cough. Tulsi is known for its effect on fever it assists your immunity system.

Lemon Ginger Chia Seeds Tea

Chia seeds are a great thing for your diet as it helps in bringing Omega 3’s into your diet. Chia seeds tea is slightly like the Japanese bubble tea but the consistency is different.

To prepare this organic recipe -

  • 1 tsp ginger root
  • 1 tsp turmeric
  • 1 tsp chia seeds
  • 6 mint leaf

Method

  • Boil your water for two regular teas and in a teapot add 1 tablespoon of grated ginger & turmeric root with 6 mint leaves.
  • Let your tea sit for 2-5 minutes, and then strain into two cups, add 1 tsp per cup amount of chia seeds into your tea.

This tea works extraordinarily well for staying hydrated and nourished, great when there is a slight temperature and you need to cool down. One should try to start his/her day with this simple yet effective soothing drink.

Golden Milk

Golden milk is a delicious creamy beverage that’s filled to the brim with nutrients. It is a traditional Indian beverage that has its roots in Ayurveda.

To prepare this nutrient-rich drink;

  • Add 1/2 cup almond milk,
  • 1/2 cup coconut milk,
  • 1/2 tsp ground ginger,
  • 1 tsp ground turmeric,
  • 1/2 tsp coconut oil, a cinnamon stick,
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper, and maple syrup to a small saucepan.

Method

Heat the combo in the saucepan on medium heat and keep whisking for 10 minutes. Turn off heat and serve immediately.


This incredibly healthy and delicious drink also helps in improving and enhancing our body’s immune system.


Tip – to make the latte flothy, use a hand blender then garnish with a pinch of cinnamon to serve.

Turmeric Apple Tonic

This is my ‘Turmeric Apple Tonic’ for springtime renewal. It’s full of cleansing and repairing fibre, vitamins and minerals suggested at this time of the year.


It is a warming wonder drink because of its powerful use of turmeric, a bitter and pungent spice. Pitta be careful not to over use this herb, a little goes a long way. As you may know turmeric helps in stimulating the body’s defense mechanism against bacterias and virus. An excellent antibiotic that helps increase digestion and helps promote good gut bacteria.

To prepare this brew:

  • 2 cup boiling water,
  • 1 apple, peeled
  • 1 tsp turmeric root
  • 1 tsp ginger root
  • 1 tsp raw honey

Method

  • Add all the ingredients into a blender.
  • Blend until smooth and then pour into a cup or a shot glass.

The above recipes help a lot in improving and enhancing our body’s immune system. One should have them on a regular basis in order to combat the any viruses and boost your immunity.
