7 Simple Steps To The Best Home Micro Greens

Amrita Ma Devi

Growing microgreens is an easy and rewarding way to add nutrition and flavour to your meals. Microgreens are small seedlings of vegetables, herbs, and other plants that have been harvested at an early stage of growth. They are usually harvested 7 to 14 days after sprouting and are much more nutritionally dense than fully grown vegetables. Find out more about the benefits and which type of seeds you need in my blog Ayurvedic Qualities Of Microgreens.

If you’re looking to grow your own microgreens, here are some helpful tips on how to get started.

1. Choose the Right Seeds: The type of microgreen seeds you choose will determine the quality of your crop. Look for seeds that are certified organic and non-GMO. Make sure to also choose the right varieties of seeds for the microgreens you want to grow.

2. Get the Right Containers: You’ll need to get the right containers for growing microgreens. The most common containers used for microgreens are seed trays, pots, or flats. You can also use recycled plastic containers or store-bought ones.

3. Prepare Your Soil: Once you have your containers, you’ll need to prepare the soil. You’ll need to mix a lightweight soil mix with a bit of compost or fertilizer and water it until it’s evenly moist.

4. Plant the Seeds: After your soil mix is ready, it’s time to plant the seeds. Make sure to spread the seeds evenly in the soil and cover them lightly with the soil. Use a light spray of water to help settle the soil.

5. Provide Adequate Lighting: Microgreens need plenty of light to grow. You can use a grow light or place your containers near a sunny window. Try to give your microgreens at least 8-10 hours of light each day.

6. Water Regularly: Microgreens need to be watered regularly. Make sure to water your plants in the morning and evening to ensure that the soil stays evenly moist.

7. Harvest When Ready: Microgreens are ready for harvest once the leaves are about 1-2 inches tall. Use scissors to cut the greens from the soil and enjoy them fresh or store them in a sealed container in the fridge for up to a week.

Growing microgreens is an easy and rewarding way to add nutrition and flavour to your meals. With just a few simple steps, you can enjoy a tasty and nutritious harvest of microgreens.
