If your little ones have a weakened immunity, they catch a cold or cough and falls sick frequently at the change of seasons, you need to focus on helping your child’s Immunity. There is a possibility that ama (Toxins) are accumulated in the digestive system that weaken your childs immunity.
In Ayurveda, we focus on strengthening your childs digestive agni (fire) to make it stronger at fighting infection. This will affect the overall health of the child both mind and body wise. Your child will feel healthier with a positive change in diet. But you will also have to make changes too as an example maker. This has the added benefit of making you healthier too.
With just a few tweeks in diet Ayurveda recommends reducing the Kapha dominant foods in the diet of the child. This will lead to a reduction in mucus and ama toxins. Eliminating processed food items such as sweets, chocolate, dairy, prepackaged foods, and refined wheat can give instant relief from colds and cough. Avoid poor food combinations such as fruit and dairy, cheese and beans, eggs and cheese and you will improve your childs digestion. My children generally feel better in three days or less when we cut back in this way and eat home cooked simple foods.
Include foods such as leafy greens, seasonal fruits, vegetables, and whole grains and lentils. Consuming warm, light and freshly cooked food are recommended. Also, chopping up and using spices like black pepper, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, fennel and fresh herbs turmeric, basil, rosemary, organo, and ginger helps to enhance the digestive fire.
Eating without snacking is best as it encourages you to digest your meal and disturb the digestive fire further without placing a strain on this system. Immune-boosting foods tend to be Ayurveda pungent, astringent, and bitter tastes. Include lentil soups or a bone broth with fresh veggies chopped into it, when your child is sick. Don’t force your child to eat if they are not hungry it could be that their body is using the energy to fight the pathogen, virus or infection. Instead make sure they drink plenty of fluids to help their lymphatic system. With an emphasis on room-temperature drinks rather than straight from the fridge.
As parents, you should encourage your child to move for fitness on a daily basis as this physical activity increases blood circulation, balances their energy levels, and also improves the flow of nutrients. Any kind of physical activity or sports can boost the detox mechanisms in the body. This way the body itself helps in the process of detoxification and makes the body stronger. Balance this out equally with good amounts of rest and down time. Making sure your child gets a good 8-10 hours sleep at night.
Sound sleep is the most important aspect of a child’s health.
Encourage your child to listen to their bodies cues for hunger and thirst and when they feel like resting or playing. Taking care of these pillars of health diet, activity, and sleep can certainly benefit their development into a healthy happy life.
