Stewed Apples & Prune
This recipe for stewed apples, prunes, and oranges isn't just a nostalgic breakfast treat - it's an Ayurvedic powerhouse!
Ayurvedic Benefits:
Easy Digestion: The combination of cooked apples and prunes creates a light and easily digestible dish, perfect for Vata and Kapha doshas, which may struggle with heavier breakfasts.
Guna Qualities: The stewing process enhances the fruits' earth (stability) and water (fluidity) qualities, promoting a sense of grounding and nourishment.
Sweet-Tart Balance: The juicy oranges with their sour (vata-balancing) and sweet (pitta-balancing) notes offer a delightful contrast to the prunes, making them more palatable for all doshas.
Boost in Essential Nutrients: Prunes are a natural source of sorbitol, magnesium, and potassium, supporting healthy digestion and elimination (particularly beneficial for Vata). Apples provide essential fibre and vitamins.
Tips for Optimal Enjoyment:
Tailor it to Your Dosha:
Vata: Add a pinch of warming spices like cinnamon or ginger for a touch of agni (digestive fire). Add a handful of chopped flax seeds or almonds.
Pitta: Opt for sweet ripe oranges or add cooling coconut flakes to balance the heat. And reduce the cinnamon to 1/4 tsp.
Kapha: For a more stimulating variation, consider adding a sprinkle of warming spices and a handful of chopped flax seeds.
Mindful Eating: Savour each bite, appreciating the natural sweetness and the textural contrast between the apples and prunes.
This simple yet nourishing dish is a wonderful way to start your day with a dose of Ayurveda's wisdom. It's a delicious reminder that healthy eating can be both pleasurable and supportive of your well-being!
